Nigerian artist, Agemo Francis, is a figurative painter and collage artist using mediums ranging from acrylic, oil, fabrics, ink, newspaper, and sand. Francis is currently based in Badagry, Lagos, and conducts political messages through his artwork, grounded in cultural and environmental influences.
Francis studied Sculpture and graduated from Delta State University, Abraka in 2008. Post-studies Francis continued to cultivate his figurative style, taking in inspiration from his surrounding culture and environment. "Art remains as a strong contender of how we share our thoughts and idea," Francis states. "Throughout history, art has survived the tidal wave of information and remains an unpredictable source of imagination. The world may not change at an instant by art, but it's slow and insipid spread into the active part of our brains lives to tell the tale".
Their work harkens back to the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, creating similar identity commentary through figurative paintings. Francis takes this a step forward by exploring the power in politics as seen in his crowned and wigged figures, brandishing their authority. We're excited for where his work will lead him in the future.
Francis's work was recently showcased this year in exhibitions at the Badagry Diaspora Festival, TERRA Kulture Gallery, and Thought Pyramid Art Center.
